A trend within CCTV is to use Surveillance Domes
in place of traditional Pan & Tilt Head functional cameras.
One of the major benefits of dome cameras is that you cannot see
which way the camera is pointing and therefore are appropriate
for ‘covert’ surveillance.
Dome cameras come complete with zoom lenses
on fast pan/tilt mechanisms. They are generally much easier and
quicker to install than conventional Pan/Tilt/Zoom type functional
cameras.
Typical pan speeds are high, one complete revolution
or more per second. Most can continuously rotate in either direction
and come equipped with full preset positioning capabilities, comprehensive
patrol and auto panning functions. Their fast speed is useful
when combined with alarm devices, which can send the camera to
a preset view almost immediately upon receipt of alarm activation.
High Speed Domes use high-resolution camera
modules with a variety of zoom lenses; 18:1 and 22:1 are typical.
Outdoor models can come equipped with filter-switching Day-Night
camera modules.
The domes come in a variety of forms, some suitable
for indoor use only and others in full weatherproof environmental
housings complete with heaters and blowers for outdoor use.
Note that it is not currently possible
to fix infrared or other lighting to the dome as it is a conventional
PTZ camera.
